For those of you who work as part of a social media agency or utilise social media for your own company, I am sure you know how difficult it can sometimes be to use Twitter for business. The problem people have faced up until recently has been the difficulty in accurately tracking exactly how much traffic Twitter is delivering to your website.

Twitter has realised this, and building on the technology they gained through their acquisition of BackType back in July, they have come to the rescue with their new release of Twitter Web Analytics. A tool designed to assist website owners in understanding how effective their Twitter campaign is performing. It will help in several ways; the tool allows users to:

See how much traffic is sent from Twitter to their website.

Determine how their online content is being shared on Twitter.

View a breakdown of how often their integrated Twitter button is being used.

Review a leaderboard of which content is sharing the most and which is delivering the most traffic.

With over 100 million clicks to external web pages being carried out every day, these features are surely to be a welcome site to many companies, as so far only advertisers have had any access to analytics.

However, if you are relieved about this update and are looking forward to using the new analytics to help you use Twitter for business, I am afraid you will have to wait just a little longer.

Currently, the update is in private beta, and according to the announcement from Twitter, it has only been rolled out to a few of their “small pilot group of partners.” It has been announced, however, that within a matter of weeks, it will be made available to all website owners.

Twitter has also stated that they are planning to release an API for the new Twitter Web Analytics to assist developers in creating third-party applications that harness the new analytics data.
