Do you find yourself pondering over whether to enter your business into a social media platform that it has never used before? Will these seemingly alien platforms have the ability to propel content towards a valuable and beneficial audience? Sometimes it feels like every day there is a new social platform or app that is taking the world by storm! We make some suggestions on which ones it might be a good idea to keep an eye on for the near future, if you’re not using them already.

Now Pinterest isn’t exactly new, but what’s intriguing about this platform is that the user base reached the milestone of more than 100 million people in September last year! As a photo/picture based social network, Pinterest’s unique feature is ‘pinning’. For a start, you’ve probably heard the saying “a picture is worth 1000 words” so a pretty image of your product can be more likely to captivate users compared with a short text description. When users ‘pin’ images, this is good news – it essentially saves them for later and the key thing is that this is really convenient to do. Think about someone who could be planning something: whether it be a wedding, birthday or even Christmas gift planning. By pinning items they’re attracted to, the user has an easily accessible reference point for a future purchase! They’re also less likely to lose interest in the product compared with leaving a webpage.

There’s been a renewed spike in interest around a service called Periscope. Maybe you recently heard something about thousands of people watching others try to cross through a puddle in Newcastle; this was all thanks to the app. In case you’re not aware, Periscope allows users to stream video live from their mobile device and broadcast it to whoever wants to tune in. Where could this come in useful for promoting content then? Well, the idea of having a two-pronged approach to promoting video could be a real winner. On the one side there’s the live stream which encourages urgency among viewers – “Hey, you don’t want to miss this – tune in now!” – but there’s also no reason why the same video shouldn’t be uploaded to YouTube to maximise engagement. Quick fact: Twitter recently announced that Periscope streams will automatically play when you browse your Twitter feed. Maybe this is because Twitter actually bought Periscope and aim to maximise its audience.

Heard of Peach? No, not the fruit. It’s a new social network app where people choose from ‘magic words’ to express their feelings. Content is added faster this way compared with typing a status update or a tweet. Updates can also be supported with animated GIFs to express how a user is feeling. A lazy approach?… That’s a different story. What it does show though, is one trend that marketers should consider because it’s becoming more and more visible: people want quick access to content and this content must be easily consumable, sharable and linkable. Look at the uproar of Twitter’s proposal to increase the character limit to 10,000! “No way!”, everyone said. If you think about it, it’s much easier (and probably funnier) to watch a grumpy cat GIF to determine that your friend is unhappy, rather than read a novel.
