What grabs your attention on social media? Is it content that carries the shock factor, things that you can relate to or maybe tasty food (hey, we can all relate to tasty food)? As times change, old trends fade away into darkness and new things appear that captivate users on a wide scale. So, without further ado, take a look through these!
1.Cute & humorous animals
“Aww”, we hear you say.
We think this trend is here to stay. An ever popular favourite, the funny cute pet, never fails to ignite emotion across social media! Consider the success of ‘Doug the Pug’ & ‘Esther the Wonder Pig’, one thing is clear: we love pets that mimic human behaviour and get caught on camera while up to hilarious antics.
2.Memes
(It is Easter soon, after all)
It just so happens that this example features a funny pet too, though chances are you’ve found the famous meme being used to convey a range of messages. People often relate to memes, which contributes to the vast sharing they often receive. Maybe you’ve seen one that accurately represents something that you’ve recently experienced? You might have empathised with it and naturally had an inclination to share it with others. Here’s an example of such a meme that is widely shared among drivers who’ve had to endure someone else’s selfish driving:
(Being based around the bustling city that is Cambridge, we can certainly relate to this one)
Think about it this way – a bitesize chunk of relatable, easily consumable content that can be shared at the click of a button. It’s no wonder so many of these go viral.
3.Polls
Twitter launched a dedicated polls feature last October and it’s been one of the most popular new features on the social network.
An opportunity to quickly and easily cast an opinion on a given subject has yielded great results in terms of engagement. Whether it be the use of polls alongside trending subjects or corporate events if you’re a business, they can be a simple but effective way to grab the attention of your audience and get them involved in relevant topics. What’s more, everyone loves a good fact – the results of polls can be as attention grabbing as taking part! Infographic anyone?
Unsure of how to make the best use of polls for your business? Twitter actually released a blog post earlier this month all around the best practices for brands using polls – you can find that here
4.Face Swaps
If you’ve used Facebook or Snapchat in the past few weeks you’re bound to have spotted these already but if your screen hasn’t been blessed by an outrageous face swap just yet, there’s a wonderful example above consisting of a fully grown man’s face being morphed onto the body of an infant.
Indeed, Snapchat recently incorporated the face-swapping feature into their app, however another service called Masquerade has been providing all sorts of ways you can change your appearance in photos & videos. Gone are the days when you needed to be a Photoshop wizard to achieve face swaps and other alterations. It will be interesting to see how Facebook incorporates photo/video editing of this kind further into their service, after all, they’ve recently acquired Masquerade…
5.Real-time/live content
A sense of urgency does wonders for grabbing the attention of social media users. It’s no surprise then that all the major players in social media are getting on the live streaming bandwagon. Twitter with their acquisition of Periscope, Facebook Live and now Google may have joined the party with YouTube Connect. What’s your take on live streaming? As it gains traction and more platforms arrive to allow brands and individuals to stream live content, it will be interesting to see if this is an attention grabbing feature that will survive the test of time.
