In a nutshell, Ecosia (pron. Eco-zea) is a search engine that offers many of Google’s features – such as predictive search suggestions, image search, information snippets, news and more. However, unlike Google, who’s primary source of revenue since it’s inception has been advertising, 80% of the Berlin-based tech company’s profits from advertising go to planting carbon-sucking trees. At the time of writing, over 72 and a half million trees have been planted by Ecosia, and four will be planted thanks to this humble writer themselves! So, here are a few things we all know:
Climate Change is BAD.
Human industry IS causing it.
Left unchecked, it WILL lead to ecological disaster, affecting communities and economies across the world.

Well, there is merit to that concern. Ecosia’s servers are powered by green energy, and actually produce more power than they need (lessening the need for burning coal, gas or oil) – however, Google is Google!! It’s the Hoover of the Search Engine Market. I doubt that anybody is going to be saying ‘oh just Ecosia it!’ anytime soon. Let’s look at the figures from StatCounter:
So, according to Statcounter, it would be a bad idea to move all of your PPC campaign materials over to Ecosia. But – we can see a fair few advantages to consider when deliberating running ads on Ecosia search…
1. Hyper-Targeted Advertising: You know one thing about Ecosia users automatically – they care about the environment. If your product or service is eco-friendly or helping to address climate change – it would be ‘strategically sound’ to invest in Ecosia and plant some trees!
2. Benefits to PR regarding CSR: With the work of Extinction Rebellion all over the news, the Climate Emergency declared by parliament this summer and the ongoing campaigning let worldwide by Greta Thunberg – brands that can say they are helping fight the good fight by using Ecosia as their search engine of choice – as well as allocating budget to the platform can not only encourage peers to do the same, but also show your customers that you’re on the right side of history – which can boost brand loyalty, recognition, and even word-of-mouth promotion!
3. Start as you mean to go on: Ecosia has received continuous press coverage since it’s inception and every time it passes a milestone the organisation will garner more praise and attention. It’ll take some time, but, get in early!
4. Legitimately help reduce carbon levels. Much of the UK is at, just above or even under sea-level. More trees means less carbon in the atmosphere, so by planting millions and millions more of them with millions and millions of collective searches, you can avoid your office building becoming an impromptu aquarium…
