It’s common knowledge that blogging makes up a huge part of SEO. As well as generating large amounts of traffic through quality content that gets shared rapidly through social media users, it also boosts your search optimisation through successful link-building strategies. So how can you make sure that you’re doing it to the best possible standard?
Here are some general rules to follow and mistakes to avoid:
DO's Keep an eye on your analytics: If you fail to do this, you have no idea how effective your blog is. More importantly, you have no clue which styles of posts are the most successful. Be aware of your success and failure; adapt your blogs accordingly. Keep a calendar of future blog posts to write: Whenever you have a new idea or see an important news story, write it down. Always try and keep on top of what’s current. Post regularly: Search engine optimisation is a marathon, not a sprint. Consistency is key, and you will quickly realise this if you fail to blog frequently. Take advantage of SMO strategies as much as possible: Social media is huge and is only going to get bigger. Are you sharing all new posts on Facebook and Twitter? Are people regularly commenting on your blog posts? Are you engaging followers and giving them a reason to join the discussion? Actually engage with your audience: If they comment, comment them back! If they post a response to your blog, give it a read and then have the decency to respond. People will recognise this effort and respect you for it.
DON’Ts Just assume that your blogs are doing fine: Check your analytics, if they’re not getting the traffic that they should be, then you need to think about what you're doing and mix things up a bit. Only write blogs once a month or so: Doing as few as this will make no difference at all. Realistically, if you want blogging to boost your SEO and gain a decent following, you should be posting at least twice a week. Ignore your comments: If you ignore people, they will ignore you. Simple. Start blogging if you hate writing: Blogging is something that takes a big chunk of free time and is not to everyone’s tastes. If you don’t think it’s really for you, you can still reap the rewards of successful blogging by hiring the aid of an advertising agency. Okay, so there you have it. As long as you’re writing good quality and relevant content regularly, with good linking and appropriate social media sharing, then you are well on your way to having a successful blog! Just remember, blogging takes time. If you put the time in, you will be rewarded.
