CAN TWITTER SAVE ITSELF?

Well we suppose we better start by re-assuring everybody that Twitter is far from dead… However, for those of you who aren’t aware, the social media giant has indeed fallen a few pegs down on the beanstalk of progress. 2015 has been, to an extent, a period of decline for Twitter with the worst of it being found during the third quarter of the year. Twitter stock declined by a whopping 45{06e29518e582b1cc2da09f8f2ea316dadc41c520023bcca83a4deb5e6ad0a3c6} in value since peak performance during late April. Ouch! Stock wasn’t the only area showing poor performance; the growth of Twitter’s worldwide user base was unexciting to say the least. The social media platform gained a puny 3 million users worldwide between July and the end of September, with the U.S user base remaining unchanged at 66 million. The worries for Twitter arrive while competitors such as Facebook witness growth and positivity. Facebook witnessed an increase in earnings during the third quarter and is in fact well on the way to taking over the world, managing to surpass 1 Billion daily active users during the same period of time. So what does the future hold for Twitter? It does seem like the new CEO is following some sort of path to innovation, what with the various new features being planned and those rolled out already. Perhaps the most controversial new feature of all is the heart icon to replace the traditional yellow star. This marks the shift between ‘favouriting’ a tweet and the new process of ‘liking’ it. Then there’s Moments: the new characteristic of Twitter that allows for real-time viewing of the best content without the need to follow specific accounts. Time will certainly tell whether these new features pave the way for a U-turn in progress for Twitter. We’re not sure if you’ve seen it, or read anything about it, but Twitter actually recently embarked on its very first TV ad campaign. That seems logical considering the circumstances you may think, but there was an overwhelming trend of confusion among viewers – and it is unclear whether the campaign had the desired effect. It will certainly be interesting to see what else the company has in store for us, but will Twitter’s development be undermined by the competition?
