Common Mistakes and SEO Training

When you release a new version of your website, whether it is a complete redesign or a minor update, it's important that you check to see that everything is in order from a search engine optimisation perspective. It's easy to accidentally implement several common problems. I'll outline these common problems:

  • Nofollows on internal links
  • Meta robots noindex added to pages
  • Robots.txt updated to disallow: /
  • All title tags are set to the homepage
  • 301s removed for canonicalisation
  • Vanishing H1s
  • Content going AWOL
  • Changing URLs
  • Product canonical tags set to category URLs
  • Removal of Analytics tracking code It's important that, if you have a team, everyone is at least somewhat versed in SEO. Not everyone has to be an expert—that's why you might employ a digital marketing agency or company—but a basic understanding aids the process so much. With SEO at the epicentre, you might be dealing with website developers, designers, copywriters, traditional marketers, PR, and a plethora of other professionals. For ease of communication, it's beneficial to train each of these links with a grounding in SEO knowledge so that they can work in conjunction with the SEO agencies and do not inadvertently work against them. This is a glaring flaw within a lot of companies. Just because your sector doesn't directly involve SEO doesn't mean you shouldn't have a working knowledge of it or how your role/work affects it. SEO can be a laborious process, and it's probably best to have a checklist of actions to tick off when performed. There are several small actions that are easily overlooked, especially when considering tags and HTML. Make a checklist of each individual step to ensure that everything is fully functional, and in proper working order.
