DO INFOGRAPHICS HELP SEO?

An infographic can be defined as a representation of information that is supported heavily by graphical elements to give a wonderfully eye-catching, concise way of conveying something. Maybe an infographic about infographics could do the job of this blog post… Well, too late now! Let’s compare an infographic with a text-based approach to displaying information. On the one hand we could have a more engaging piece of content that potentially holds less information – which is the infographic. On the flipside, content made through a text based approach may cover a subject in more detail but the likelihood of the information being taken in by viewers is lessened. Most would agree that something in the style of an infographic is far more beneficial when aiming to captivate an audience. Like anything though, if done badly then an infographic is unlikely to achieve this effect. The research and design efforts are what make or break the success of an infographic – fall flat with them and chances are you’ll be left with something pretty but pretty useless, too. Ok, so infographics have been briefly investigated from a user experience aspect but you may be wondering if they can help with SEO and if so, how. From an SEO perspective, an infographic is essentially an image and it is no secret that the content on image files cannot be read by search engines. This therefore means that the text on the infographic will unfortunately not be recognised and the content will not directly contribute to search ranking. After reading this, you may think “so what’s the point in creating an infographic to help my SEO?” Well, as discussed earlier, the key benefit of infographics is that they ease the access to information in a graphical way. This makes the content more appealing to users which in turn provides what is called link bait: the internet is the rod, the infographic is the bait and if someone shares and links to your site – you’ve reeled in and caught! Simply put, there is a positive knock-on effect that can be seen from a good infographic: more engaging content = more likelihood of social sharing and links to your site (bloggers can really like infographics) = a larger profile of backlinks will in turn contribute to SEO success. Infographics don’t necessarily cost the earth either but bear in mind if slightly more money is spent then there’s a fair chance of higher quality output. If it’s good enough, there is even a chance that it will go viral. Thanks for reading our ‘Do Infographics Help SEO?’ article.
