Everything You Need To Know About The iPhone 5

Apple has finally officially announced all of the new features of the iPhone 5. Earlier today, the Apple conference presented by Phil Schiller, senior VP of worldwide marketing, revealed the all-important details of their newest addition to the iPhone model line. The 4-inch display allows for an extra row of icons (via Apple)

Hardware

4-inch display The biggest design difference is the size of the display—it’s been lengthened to 4 inches. This allows for an extra row of icons, widescreen videos, and more information displayed on the software. Apple’s software has been optimised for the new display, and third-party apps will be adjusted where necessary.

8MP iSight camera 25% smaller but 40% faster at snapping pictures with f/2.4 aperture and hybrid IR filter, the new iSight camera provides backlight illumination, a dynamic low light mode, precision lens alignment, and a sapphire crystal lens that is purported to be more durable than glass. There’s also a new panorama mode, taking advantage of the longer display, that lets you take pictures of vistas up to 28MP. iSight has improved image stabilisation, and you now can take pictures whilst recording video. 2x Performance Apple reported double the CPU performance and graphics speed.

New Lightning Connector As rumours suggested, the old 30-pin cable has been ditched in favour of the more streamlined all-new 8-pin connector, nicknamed ‘Lightning’. It’s supposedly more durable, reversible, and has an adaptive interface. And there’s an adaptor for your old connector. Lightning 6-pin Connector (via Apple)

Same battery life on 4G as 3G Despite the greater demands of faster data performance granted by connection to 4G, Apple has maintained that it will not eat up more battery life than 3G. I think the back of the case bares a passing resemblance to the design of the original iPhone, which I raved about liking earlier today. (Image via Apple)

Software Schiller touched upon a number of software updates granted by the new iOS 6 update coming on the 19th of September. Facebook and Twitter compatibility with Notification Center, which lets you tweet and post without entering the apps. You can also use Siri to post to your Facebook. Photo Stream lets you share photos directly to Facebook, and other users can comment and share using the Photo Stream software. The passbook, which contains vouchers, flight tickets, and various other passes and cards, is operational from the lock screen, making it easy to use in the right situation. Apple’s Maps using TomTom navigation will succeed Google Maps, with much of the same functionality as the former. It will also feature Points of Interest, which lets you view locations on maps and discover more information about a restaurant, club, or venue.

When and What? In the box, you’ll get the iPhone 5, Apple EarPods with remote and microphone, a Lightning to USB cable, and a USB power adaptor. The iPhone 5 is available for pre-order from September 14th; you can get your hands on one by 8 am on September 21st in the UK if you’re willing to fork out £529.
