Google buys Motorola Mobility | The Digital Clicks Blog

Search engine giant Google has taken the next step on their path to world dominance in acquiring Motorola Mobility, the mobile phone manufacturing department of the major global communications hardware company. The company was purchased for a colossal $12.5 billion, at approximately $40 per share in the company. What’s clear from this move is that Google has its eyes set on Apple and is in the next stages of its plan to dominate the mobile market. The potential for an all-Google mobile device is huge. Imagine a mobile device that is completely manufactured and distributed by Google, running Google’s Android software, and optimised for Google’s hugely successful online services. While Google was quick to clarify that this would not signify the end of open-platform Android devices, this business move makes a clear statement that they are looking to make some form of an official Google phone. Their main competitors in the worldwide mobile phone vendor market are Nokia with a staggering 29.2% market share, Samsung with 18.8%, LG Electronics with 6.6%, and Apple with 5.0% (all statistics are from the first quarter of 2011). While Apple’s market share isn’t as high as some of the other companies, keep in mind that their mobile phone is completely manufactured by Apple and runs entirely on Apple software, something that the other successful manufacturers do not do. If Google wants to rival Apple, they’ve got their work cut out. So what does this mean for online marketing, anyway? Android’s purpose is to provide a successful mobile platform that will ultimately dominate the mobile search market. So with a mobile manufacturer behind them too, Google will be able to focus their search integration to a whole new level. Hypothetically, if they were to dominate the mobile Internet even further as a result of this move, mobile SEO and PPC tactics would have to be altered accordingly to focus on Google Mobile AdWords more than the likes of Apple iAds. It is necessary to point out that, at this stage, this all remains speculation. Only time will tell what the future holds for Google’s endeavours in the mobile industry.
