Google has a little present in the pipeline that could be handy for local SEO. Google calls it “an experimental new podium” where you can “hear directly from the people and organisations you care about”. We’ll translate; what this means in plain old English is that the feature allows organisations and individuals to display snippets of content on the search engine results page (SERP), when brand/publisher related search queries are performed. You may be thinking this seems like a Twitter feed of some sort but you would be wrong. The snippets, or rather carousel style tiles, appear similar to other social media feeds but the content is actually hosted directly with Google via posts.google.com/[the brand or publisher]. This is the case at the moment anyway. Here’s how they will be shown in the SERP, courtesy of Google: Each tile in the carousel can be clicked to take you to an expanded feed with more posts which currently looks like this: Notice how there’s no sign of Google+ here? Could this be indicating some sort of further shake up of Google+? Think back to last year when reviews were removed from Google+ local listings
that was an unexpected ditching of what was seen by many as a very useful feature. They did retain the reviews and star ratings in the search listings though (which is why you can still see how great we are when you search ‘digital clicks’!). What seems strange with the experimental feature is that it seems to have no relationship with Google+ at all. It would surely make sense to pull content from the social network in order to bolster use of the service? If Google+ posts were being shown slap bang under the first search result, they would probably be a lot more powerful than they currently are. Pieces of content posted using the feature can however be shared across all major social media platforms, Google+ included, but comments are disabled. At the present time, usage is restricted to an invite-only list and to tell the truth, it’s pretty unclear when or even if it could become open for more widespread use. However, Google’s landing page for the feature gives the option to join a waitlist… Interesting stuff. This does give the impression that its more of a yes than a no as to whether we might be able to get our hands on it in the future… Thanks for reading our ‘Google's Latest Experiment with Search Results’ article.
