Google’s Title Tag Algorithm

Website owners optimise their websites according to some specified title tags. These title tags should then be used to rank the pages in search results. However, many website owners have expressed concern about Google ignoring their optimised title tags, which has made things difficult for them. Companies spend a lot of money on search engine optimisation. Search engines have become the most used tool to search for any query or data, and because of this very reason, websites optimise their content according to specified keywords or title tags to gain rankings in the search list pages. Creative advertising agencies express concern that if a giant like Google starts ignoring these title tags, their search engine optimisation efforts might just go in vain. However, Google, in its release sometime back, stated that Google's title tag algorithm has been designed to extract the maximum out of the title tags. There may be cases when Google picks a different title tag for you. You should not worry if you have found Google picking up a different title tag for you than you chose, it is for your benefit. Google lists why your Title tag is important and how the algorithm gets better results for you.

  • Google's revolutionary algorithm picks up three title tags. Generally, pages are optimised for a single title tag, and hence their optimisation becomes redundant because Google receives so many searches that might be related to the page. Google's algorithm makes sure that the scope of your page is not limited to just a page, and you also get respectable ranks on other title tags for which your page is not optimised.
  • The alternative titles that the Google algorithm chooses are actually beneficial for the websites, as they increase the click-through rate of the website. This means that the website would get far more traffic.
  • The title tag still stays a primary source for the tags that Google chooses. You can always use their advice while choosing your title tags. You can get access to the advice regarding title tags in the diagnostics section of Webmaster Tools. There is a separate HTML suggestions page in the diagnostics section that will help you in this regard. Here are some cases when Google may think that your title tags aren't worth it:
  • Long and confusing title tags: Many internet marketing experts spend a substantial time deciding the title tags, while some of them still go over the top and stuff keywords, compromising the readability. Never try to target more because Google likes it short and precise. Moreover, a longer keyword wouldn't be justified for your needs.
  • Duplicate titles: Choosing unique titles for every page can be very difficult; however, this is exactly what Google wants. Never copy and paste the same title tag to all pages of your website. Every page has a different importance, and hence you would need different tags for all pages. The title tag algorithm is very confusing, but the algorithm gets you more benefits than you would have originally received using your own title tag set.
