We often get asked, why keyword is mapping such an important task at the start of an SEO campaign? Well, let us explain. Keyword mapping if you’re not familiar with the term, is the process where in which we allocate each URL on the website with campaign keywords. A general rule of thumb is no more than 5 keywords per URL. So now you know what keyword mapping means, let’s take a step back for a moment. Before a keyword mapping document can be created a keyword analysis must be undertaken. In basic terms this process involves putting together a list of relevant keywords that users are most likely to be searching for in order to find a website offering that service/product. Once a keyword list is decided upon, time is then spent mapping each keyword to the most relevant URL. Let’s take an example; if a company was looking to target a keyword such as ‘seo Cambridge’ they would have that keyword mapped to the SEO Cambridge URL. You may be thinking this sounds like a very slow process that is just undertaken as an almost admin like task that has no real importance? Well you would be wrong. The mapping document underpins the SEO campaign. The mapping document is used to refer back to on a regular basis as it offers structure when optimising on page elements. It also helps when trying to write content as you know exactly which keywords you need to be targeting. Another benefit of using a keyword mapping document is you ensure that there is a proper structure in place so that inner pages of the website can also potentially rank. This in turn ensures that you do not get the same URL ranking for multiple keywords, as no one wants just their homepage ranking for all their keywords!
