INCREASE YOUR CLICK THROUGH RATE WITH SEO
So, you’ve followed the steps for great SEO and reached the top of the search rankings. Nice job. Loads of people can see you now, but seeing doesn’t equal clicking. If you can’t grab their attention as they scan down that search page, your click through rate won’t improve. Fortunately, help is at hand – a list of five useful ways to generate lots of clicks. First, a handy diagram. This is how Google displays its results. It’s been highlighted for your convenience – you are very welcome. 1. Meta Title This is the bit in red. It’s the title element of your page, appearing just above your URL (shown in orange.) Google will display around 60 characters for you – and yes, this does affect your search ranking. Try to include at least one keyword – Google will highlight it if someone uses it in their search, and it’ll pop right out at them. This should be different for every page you have. In purple you can see four other pages underneath, all with tailored meta titles such as SEO Cambridge and Contact. 2. Meta Description This is the bit in yellow – they may not influence the search rankings directly, but they’re still really useful. You get 160 characters before it cuts you off, and just like the title you should make each page a different description. Keep it concise and relevant to the page. You could even try to engage people by using a call to action. Just be careful to keep it alphanumeric, or Google might cut you off. If you’re too lazy to put your own, Google will take a section of text containing the search term from your page. 3. Reviews If you don’t have a Google+ for your business, get one now. You’ll get a star-rating displayed right under your description – eye-catching, right? It draws even more attention, and Google+ reviews are trusted because people have to sign in first. In addition, Google Maps now shows your reviews very prominently, and shows businesses with better reviews first. You can see your address and location (in blue) under your star rating. Your search result will also link directly to your Google+ page (in green) where hopefully, you’ve stuck all your contact details. Third-party review sites are useful too, because they normally appear high on the page. A spread of reviews across sites looks organic, especially if they are consistently good. Positive reviews are probably the most powerful click-through factor you have. They are especially important for local SEO. 4. Citations These are online references for your business – your name, address and phone number. You want as many as possible but you must keep them consistent. If you want to put gaps in your phone number, you must do the same everywhere. Google doesn’t want to provide wrong information to users. You have to make it feel confident about showing you off, and lots of identical citations across industrially relevant pages are more likely to be correct. Be nice to Google, and it will be nice to you. 5. Social Media Optimisation Who isn’t on social media? You can plaster citations across it and make your content easy to share across networks. You want as many people to see it as possible, right? You can try to get it to rank as well. Make your content bite-sized and easy to consume, make sharing it easy, and use it to invite people to start a conversation.
