SMO: Different Users on Social Media | The Digital Clicks Blog

Social media is like anything else in life; people use it in different ways and for different benefits. Defining and understanding the different types of social users is key to your SMO being a successful and worthwhile part of Internet marketing. Here are the three main types of social media users and how they can be engaged: Materialist Followers

  • Those who participate in contests, promotions, coupon offers, and virtually any other form of promotion. They want something in return for joining you on social media. According to studies, 27% of people unfollowed brand profiles on Twitter because they only started following to enter a competition or giveaway. Make them want to follow and engage with you by increasing the amount of time your promotions run, requesting more user participation to enter the competitions, perhaps offering a consolation prize for runners-up to avoid disappointment, and announcing future competitions and promotions ahead of schedule to maintain a level of hype around your company. Impulse Followers: Research shows that as many as 51% of social media users will follow or “like” a brand page on impulse, maybe after seeing a post they enjoyed or an ad that speaks to them on a personal level. They don’t see their following as the beginning of any kind of serious relationship and are not looking to engage with your company at this point in time. Give them an incentive to engage with your brand by making a variety of posts on a range of topics that are more likely to surprise your followers. Make sure you’re posting a variety of content, as research indicates that 52% of users will unfollow a brand account due to repetitive posts. Seek feedback on which of your topics has generated the most interest from users. Finally, avoid being overly pushy, as research indicates that 44% of users have unfollowed accounts due to excessive posting frequency. Information-Seeking Followers: This is the most valuable part of your following, those who see your company's social media presence as a source of information. Disinterested in chatting, perks, and gaining recognition, they are more interested in tips, tutorials, and thought-provoking posts. Keep their thirst for knowledge quenched by concentrating posts on information that they can actively use and try for themselves, such as quick tutorials and tips. Stay relevant by sharing news and exciting content as quickly as possible. Ensure your posts are of a consistently high standard by not posting anything for the sake of it, and finally, try to keep the promotional posts to a minimum, as these will put a lot of information seekers off your brand. Of course, appealing to all of these different types of users at once is a difficult, if not impossible, task. For this reason, recruiting the help of an online marketing company to run this for you can be hugely beneficial and saves the risk of using the wrong methods to get through to your audience.
