As 2012 draws to a close, and provided we all survive the apocalypse apparently happening on the 21st December, it's time to start thinking about the New Year. Judging by current trends, and the proliferation of algorithm updates to Penguin and Panda being rolled out by Google
2013 could be a very busy year for SEO. Constantly evolving the way in which search engines work means internet marketing agencies and businesses need to stay ahead of the curve to maintain and promote rankings. But what does 2013 hold in store for SEO? If current trends are anything to go bysocial media will be massive for search. With each update, it seems to gain an increasingly larger foothold. Whilst a great deal of data from Facebook and Twitter is restricted from Google, the search engine's own social network Google+ is becoming a vital tool for search. As a social platform, Google+ didn't really take offit failed to drag the majority of users from their beloved Facebook or Twitterbut as a tool for SEO, it's indispensible. In 2013, every self-respecting business should have a regularly updated Google+ account. Content and sites with Google+'s equivalent of a Like, a +1, will enjoy a boost to their SEO profile and higher rankingsshowing that it is endorsed by users. As well as +1's, regularly sharing your website's content on Google+ will help quickly index the page. There's a rumour that content shared on Google+ is immediately crawled by Google's spiders, meaning quicker indexing and a chance to rank highly more swiftly. Google+ is essentially becoming a hub for SEO effortsas you are able to link your Google Places account with your Google+, and now the network has introduced a way of drawing together all of your blog posts under the same authorship. Using a short line of markup rel="author", the search engine draws your Google+ profile image to create a headshot to go alongside your blog posts in search results. Tests have shown that the addition of a headshot greatly improves click-through-rates, particularly when surrounded by links without authorship images. Optimising Google+ pages, including profile images will become essential for SEO. Google will be working to improve their access to other social networks, as Bing has, to use the full width and breadth of social shares on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest etc. to determine whether content has value to Internet users. Social is only growing, and will have a massive influence on all areas of Internet marketing across the board. Social is going to be big, even bigger than now, for search in 2013. As social networks grow their web of influence, more and more social data will become available for search engines to use to provide personalised results for searchers. This will also result in a much more personal approach to business and selling onlineno longer can companies hide behind logos. Social users value a face to a business, a name to trust and an injection of personality. Keep it social if you want to stay on top in 2013!Post navigation
