The Battle Between Facebook and Twitter | The Digital Clicks Blog

For years now, Facebook and Twitter have been contending for the spot as the number one social network, but now a new contender has entered the fold. While Facebook and Twitter are both vastly different in services and features, it is still more likely that you will use more of one than the other. Realistically, you don’t want to be sharing the same content across multiple platforms. So for the last few years, the two have been battling for social network supremacy, improving services, ease of use, speed of sharing and buying, and making deals to better their products. But the two have a very similar problem: their method of sharing. When you share something on Facebook, only your friends can see it. What about if I want to talk to and share with people I haven’t met yet but who have similar interests as me? The only way I could do that is to go out and meet these people, then add them. With Twitter, if I post something, it's out there; absolutely anyone and everyone can see that. I’m not so keen on sharing my holiday photos with strangers. It’s this space between the two products that has created the missing link, which is Google Plus. With Plus, you can choose which circles you put people in and share specifically what you share with whom via these circles, and then choose what permissions these people have to do with your content. If you add someone to a circle, they don’t necessarily have to add you back too; just like an unreciprocated follow on Twitter, you can see their public posts. Also, from an online marketing standpoint, grouping people up and sharing content with them helps with targeting. Helping with categorising people for PPC targeting too. Entering the social media game now is a risky move for Google, especially after not having much luck with Google Buzz and Wave. I think Google has hit the middle ground perfectly; we will just have to see how it all plays out.
