Top Ten Facebook Hates

The vast majority of us use Facebook. Whether you've got 30 friends or 3000, even if you only use it to set up Events or play Farmville, using Facebook means you’ll be inundated with the latest output from your friends’ status updates. So do you ignore your newsfeed like the plague, or scroll down it several times a day? What makes you sigh when you see it? Here at Digital Clicks we asked 30 people for their least favourite type of Facebook status. Here are ten of them, in no particular order. PS: Don’t worry if a type of status you enjoy posting is below: several of us in the office have admitted to one or more of them! 1. Game requests This was by far the highest ranking result. “X needs help in Farmville!” “Give X a new life in Candy Crush!” You know, there’s a way for players to turn those off, right? Or restrict them to people who … might care? 2. The Joys of Politics Everyone knows someone on their feed who’s optimistic enough to mention politics. Everyone’s seen the fallout when it happens – and why are the most fervent commentators always the people with no clue what they’re talking about? The internet is a place of free speech and all that jazz, but lots of you agree that “no politics at the dinner table,” should be rolled into your other social spheres too. It just never ends nicely. 3. Attention-seeking posts “I’m so sad. This has been the worst day EVER.” And then refusing to talk about why. Lots of our respondents didn't understand why people would post this sort of stuff, but two of them were honest enough to admit to simply being annoyed because of the unfulfilled promise of gossip. 4. Baby posts Babies are cute. Your baby is the cutest thing ever to have existed. Your friends understood that by the second photo album, honestly. Four of our survey reported having to scroll significantly downwards to find something that wasn't their friends’ children. 5. Food pictures I always thought this was just an Instagram thing, but no, the survey disabused me of that notion. It might serve some purpose if the food is really artistic, or if you’re a student trying to convince your parents you’re cooking for yourself, but other than that the general opinion seemed to be that it’s just not interesting. 6. PDA I wasn't surprised to see this hate; the argument about Public Displays of Affection is probably as old as when we discovered kissing. Some people think it’s cute, some people don’t mind it, and it really, really annoys others. 7. Holidays Our respondents were pretty unanimous: seeing an entire holiday, from checkout (delayed plane!) to arriving at the hotel (duckface selfie with a hat!) to lounging by the pool (as in the picture shown) and then coming home again (delayed plane again!) documented on their feed … it just isn’t necessary. It’s just forcing ever-more-distant acquaintances to sit through the “Look at our holiday snaps!” process which used to be relegated to grandparents and aunties. 8. Sporting feats I think we can gather from this that our 30 people did not include many fitness enthusiasts. Statuses detailing how far that friend has run today (complete with maps) do not produce enthusiasm in their followers. 9. Big Events Whether it’s the Olympics or Valentine’s Day, the eclipse or the World Cup, no-one seems able to decide whether the celebratory statuses are any more annoying than the legions of people complaining. Either way, when one event dominated their feed our respondents got bored very quickly. 10. Guilt-trips When this showed up on our results I flashed back to the old chain emails of yore. The overwhelming view here was that sharing a link about cancer research or mental illness or a sad case which needs donations is perfectly ok. What annoys people is when those posts come fully equipped with inferences that if you don’t share these posts, you are a horrible person. Well, there you have it. What do you think? Any that you thought should have been included? Any you disagree with? Let us know! Error: Contact form not found.
