It’s true; Google is everywhere. Not that this is news to probably anyone living south of the North Pole, but the fact that Google has now managed to infiltrate 61 of the top 100 universities within the US with their Google Apps is pretty impressive. These institutions of academia, renowned the world over, have slowly but surely succumbed to the use of apps in education. A concept that only a few years previously would have been scorned by professors and teachers as not proper academic behaviour yet has now been welcomed with open arms by some of the most famous and oldest universities. US News recently released the latest rankings of the best universities within their nation, and Google has proudly announced that they have succeeded in attributing partnerships with 61 of them. Just some of the features boasted by Google are Google Docs, the word processing application that allows students to work on the same document at the same time from anywhere in the world. As well as implementing students with Gmail email accounts, improving student and staff relations, and using Google Calendar, which can be set up to arrange meetings between tutors and clubs, basically almost anything related to the academic calendar. Not only is Google stretching its power further than ever, increasing its search engine optimisation, but it also makes the vital point that it is preparing students of these participating universities, the future generation, in a class of their own by using the newest technology from the onset. Educating students with Google Apps gives students and staff a hands-on approach to the latest and best innovative technology out there. Google prides itself on the secure nature of Google Apps, encouraging its customers by assuring them that the security placed within the Apps is the same that protects Google.com itself. This added notion of protection for their students is likely to cinch the deal between any universities that doubt the reliability of Google. Google has compiled a portfolio of glowing recommendations from students, faculty, and staff, which showcases which features are being used most within the universities whilst showing other institutions what they are missing out on by restricting their students from collaborating with Google.
