Twitter Rolls Out New Design

Twitter Rolls Out New Design

Been on Twitter lately? It seems there have been a few changes! You can now access your profile page easily from the home screen by selecting the new "Me" tab across the top. When you get onto your profile, you'll have the option of making a new 'header' image. Whilst it's not particularly revolutionary, or original (Obviously it's going to draw comparisons to other social media profiles

  • Facebook and Google+), it gives your profile a more professional and interesting look, and creates more opportunities for branding of your page. This all depends on what image you decide to use, of course. The header image is placed at the top of your profile, with your avatar placed in a more central location than its previous appearance on the left. Your descriptive text and location overlay the header image. The photo stream of your "twitpic" now appear in a larger box at the top left of your profile, which means the thumbnails are larger, and the box can now house more of your images. You might opt to get the ball rolling on the new design, and like Facebook, get the new design before it eventually forcibly introduces itself as the standard. If you want the new header style, here's how to get it:
  • Select 'Me' to go to your profile page
  • Select "Settings", and then "Edit profile"
  • Select "Header" and you’ll have the option to choose an existing photo or take one.
  • The image can be cropped or resized to 520260 pixels, so make sure your image works within those dimensions!
  • Tips: Your text will be white, so try to avoid using colours that’ll clash, or make it difficult to read. Similarly, it looks like the image is darkened by Twitter slightly, so existing dark images might appear too dark in the new design. The changes are most apparent on mobile systems
  • if you have the Twitter app on your phone or tablet, you'll see how the new design has been optimised with mobile in mind. You might even argue that the design on regular Twitter access was merely an afterthought. Nevertheless, a focus on mobile really emphasises the mobile nature of Twitter, giving a much-improved experience on those platforms. So do you like the new design? Or do you think Twitter is copying its competitors too closely? Some critics have argued that it marks a change in Twitter's iconic minimalist style, and could lead to over-complication down the line.
