WHAT EFFECT WILL PAID ADVERTISING HAVE ON INSTAGRAM?

Until fairly recently, sizeable corporations such as John Lewis and Cadbury were exclusively privy to the extremely promising opportunity that is paid advertising through Instagram. That’s right, the service is now open for business for brands of all shapes and sizes. Now, Instagram advertising is not to be overlooked and ignored as there is some serious value to be had for marketers. Arguably the most beneficial aspect is the ability to grab a target audience with ads that are far more captivating than their text-based counterparts. This is achieved through the ad formats offered by Instagram: Image, Video and Carousel ads, the latter of the three delivering greater interactivity through the ability for users to swipe through a collection of images. Sure, its been a financial boomer so far – bringing in 600 billion dollars in revenue – but it can’t be the ‘selfie generation’ alone that is to blame for the success. Maybe it’s the endless supply of pretty food and cute puppies that provides the accompanying visual stimuli that propels adverts towards the temptation of viewers, but that’s another story. Nevertheless, Instagram allows advertisers to harness this possibility while serving a splendid spread of targeting options that show similarity to those of big daddy company Facebook. In fact, Instagram ads can be “purchased and managed” through Facebook’s self serve program. Location, age and gender are just some of the specifics available for use but Instagram can also make use of the Custom Audience functionality: upload a list of at least 20 email addresses or phone numbers and voilà, present an add to everyone on the list (as long as they’re on Facebook)! It could be a well founded anticipation that the floodgates of advertising being opened for Instagram may cause a decline in usage of the service. However, initial indications point to the contrary. Early October saw the milestone of 400 million Instagram users, establishing the service as a constantly growing base of consumers that brands are likely to alter their strategy to accommodate for. Marketers: bear in mind though that Instagram favours high click through rates so if an ad is proving engaging, expect it to be shown more often.
